Krypton was discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers while separating the components of liquefied air. Its name comes from the Greek word kryptos, meaning "hidden," because it was difficult to detect due to its very low abundance.
Krypton is present in Earth's atmosphere in extremely small amounts, making up only about one part per million of the air. It is obtained commercially through the fractional distillation of liquefied air.
