Scandium was discovered in 1879 by the Swedish chemist Lars Fredrik Nilson while studying rare-earth minerals. It confirmed Dmitri Mendeleev's prediction of an unknown element called "eka-boron."
Scandium is not found as a pure metal in nature. It occurs in small amounts in minerals such as thortveitite, euxenite and gadolinite.
