Vanadium was first discovered in 1801 by Andrés Manuel del Río in Mexico. It was rediscovered in 1830 by the Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström, who named it after "Vanadis," the Norse goddess of beauty.
Vanadium occurs naturally in minerals such as vanadinite, carnotite and magnetite. It is also found in crude oil, phosphate rocks and certain iron ores.

Vanadium is mainly used to produce high-strength steel for automobiles, aircraft, railway tracks, bridges, pipelines and industrial tools.

Vanadium reacts with strong oxidizing acids at high temperatures but forms a protective oxide layer that improves corrosion resistance.
